The beginning
Although the exact date isn’t known, it’s believed that Leap Castle was built around the 13th century by the ruling clan – the O’Bannon clan – but the specific details of its construction seem to be lost in time. Legend has it, though, that two brothers competed for control of the clan, which led to a perilous leap off the rocky terrain where the castle now stands.
In the end, the survivor claimed the castle for himself and was unofficially named the ‘Leim Ui Bhanain‘ or ‘Leap of the O’Bannons’ castle. As the castle website states: “Thus the castle was built, fueled by blood and death.”
Under O’Carroll rule
In the late 15th century, rule of the castle was taken over by the O’Carroll clan. Unfortunately, their reign marked a horrific era filled with bloodshed, treachery, and unspeakably terrible acts. At this time, the castle became a crucible of violence, with each generation only adding layers to its macabre legacy.
This is also when some of the most infamous incidents (like the murder in the Bloody Chapel and the horrors of oubliette) took place. Of course, this has only contributed to the stronghold’s reputation as Ireland’s most haunted castle.
Transitions of ownership
Over the centuries, Leap Castle exchanged hands like a cursed coin, passing from one dynasty to another against the backdrop of political upheaval. At first, the Darby family ruled throughout the mid-17th century, when there were rumours of secret passages and clandestine rituals circling around the imposing castle.
Then, the Ryans (another prominent lineage) assumed control of the building and, through their cruel and sadistic ways, added even more tragedy to the castle’s already sordid history. And although there isn’t much known about what went on within the walls of Leap Castle, the remaining souls that linger here could have plenty to say – if only they could communicate it.

Despite the passage of time that has passed, Leap Castle hasn’t been able to shake its eerie reputation and draws visitors from all around the world to tour its haunted halls. Now, under the ownership of musician Sean Ryan and his family, there has been a lot of effort to preserve the castle’s cultural heritage while also acknowledging its status as the most haunted castle in Ireland.

Ghosts Of Leap Castle
Within the shadowy confines of Leap Castle, the whispers of the past still linger on while spectral apparitions are said to roam about its ancient corridors. From the infamous Red Lady to unexplained paranormal activity, this hotbed of spiritual activity is much more horrifying than your average haunted house…
The Red Lady
One of Leap Castle’s most famous ghosts is the Red Lady, who is said to wander the halls dressed completely in red. While not much is known about where she came from or who she was, it’s believed that she may have been a woman who was captured and tortured by the O’Carroll clan.
Some legends surrounding the Red Lady say that she was pregnant at the time of her capture, and subsequently lost the baby. Now, filled with vengeance, she appears wielding a dagger – perhaps hoping to run into one of the O’Carrolls and finally get her revenge.
Although there are some reports that her presence is extremely unsettling, some visitors have said that, despite her dark and imposing look (and her dagger), she is actually an extremely friendly ghost when she appears during tours of the castle. It’s said that she can be quite curious and even a little mischievous with guests – but it’s all in good fun!
With such conflicting reports, it’s hard to say whether you should fear the Red Lady. But, to be on the safe side, it may be best to leave her be if she’s bold enough to reveal herself to you on a visit to the castle.
The Murder Hole room
Deep within the bowls of Leap Castle is the ghastly Murder Hole room, which is steeped in darkness and dread. Rumour has it that one of the castle’s inhabitants committed a gruesome murder here but was never caught or tried for their crimes.
However, several different apparitions have been seen here. So exactly how many people did this elusive criminal murder? Or, is it just a hot spot for the ghosts of the castle? Either way, this is one of the most active parts of the castle, with multiple sources claiming to have gotten clear EVP recordings while walking through on their tours.
The Bloody Chapel
The chapel within the castle’s walls – now dubbed the ‘Bloody Chapel’ – is another site where paranormal activity seems to run rampant. These walls are said to have been stained with blood when a priest was murdered by his own brother during a mass ceremony. Now, the chapel is forever linked to tales of betrayal and vengeance.
Some say that the priest still appears in the chapel to this day, pacing around as if in deep thought before vanishing without a trace.
The Priest’s House
Abandoned and forlorn, the Priest’s House is home to plenty of spectral monks and ghostly presences that lurk within its crumbling walls. Although there have been attempts to reach out to these apparitions, they don’t seem to be aware of the presence of visitors to the castle.
Still, guests have reported feeling their presence over their shoulders or skulking in the shadows of this derelict building, giving it a sinister atmosphere that leaves plenty of visitors feeling lightheaded and strange…

Just remember to be respectful of the rules, and only bring along the ghost equipment that he has authorised. After all, you wouldn’t want to upset the castle’s ghostly residents…
